Ameren Illinois Collects 40,000 Refrigerators for Recycling

The Ameren Illinois ActOnEnergy® Refrigerator Recycling Program recently achieved an energy efficiency milestone by collecting its 40,000th refrigerator/freezer unit to be recycled.

The refrigerator was picked up at the home of Margaret A. of Champaign, who purchased the refrigerator 25 years ago. Like other customers who participate in the program by recycling their refrigerator or freezer, Margaret will receive $50 from ActOnEnergy and save $150 or more annually in electricity bills by replacing her old refrigerator.

"The amount of energy used by those 40,000 refrigerators and freezers is equal to the power used by about 4,000 typical residential customers for an entire year," said Karen Warnke, Ameren Illinois Customer Service energy efficiency advisor.

The retirement of the old refrigerators will prevent about 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere in just one year. Additionally, 10,400 tons of metal and other waste is kept out of landfills.

Ameren Illinois customers interested in recycling their old refrigerator should call 866.899.9088 to schedule a pickup of their refrigerator.
