When you register to login and access your account information, or apply for jobs using eRecruit, Ameren uses the most secure form of encryption generally available for internet browsers. The secured sections of Ameren.com use SSL (Secured Socket Layer) technologies and require 128-bit encryption.
Q: What is data encryption?
A: Data encryption “scrambles” information that is sent over the internet, so that only the intended computer can read it. A hacker could still intercept the data, but because of encryption, the information could not be read.
Q: What is 128-bit encryption?
A: SSL comes in two strengths: 128 bit and 40 bit. 128-bit sessions are trillions of times stronger than 40 bit sessions.
Q: How can I tell what encryption my browser currently has?
A: It depends on which browser you are using:
MS Internet Explorer
1. Select Help from the browser menu.
2. Select About Internet Explorer.
3. Under Cypher Strength you will see 40 bit or 128 bit encryption.
Netscape Navigator
1. Select Help from the browser menu.
2. Select About Navigator.
3. The text “This version supports International security” means you have 40-bit encryption.
4. The text “This version supports US security” means you have 128-bit encryption.
AOL
1. In the address bar, type the keyword “Browser”.
2. Look for the “Security Level” in the information displayed.
Q: How can I get 128-bit encryption?
A: Depending on your browser, you will need to visit the respective Netscape or Microsoft websites to determine whether you will be able to download the free upgrades. You will need to be on MS Internet Explorer version 5.01 or higher, or Netscape version 4.73 or higher. If you are at work, you should check with your system administrator to see if you can install this on your machine.
