Missouri Schools Going Solar

AmerenUE was a partner in Missouri Schools Going Solar (MSGS), a solar energy education project created by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. MSGS awarded grants in the amount of $10,000 each to 20 Missouri schools that are UE electric customers.

The awarded funds were used to install 1-kilowatt photovoltaic solar arrays on school grounds. Winning schools also received curricular materials and training to help teachers incorporate lessons about energy efficiency and renewable energy into classroom courses and activities.

Funding for the education program came from MSGS, as well as a required $2,500 cash match that each school was required to provide. Another partner in the project was the EarthWays Center for Resource Efficiency, a division of the Missouri Botanical Garden. EarthWays Center for Resource Efficiency, a regional leader in energy and environmental education, provided the energy education program to the schools.

The Energy Center, an office of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Outreach and Assistance Center, managed Missouri Schools Going Solar on behalf of the Residential/Commercial Energy Efficiency Collaborative. The collaborative, formed as part of a settlement approved in 2002 by the Missouri Public Service Commission and other parties, included members from the Missouri Public Service Commission, the Energy Center, Office of Public Counsel, UE and the Missouri Energy Group. UE made available a total of $350,000, through June 2007, to implement MSGS in its Missouri electric service territory.
