When energy thieves unlawfully use electricity or natural gas, they are stealing from every honest customer. As shoplifters drive up the cost of merchandise, energy thieves push up the cost of electricity and natural gas.
Of even greater concern, energy thieves put others at risk. Attempts to tamper with or bypass electric or natural gas meters can cause a shock, electrocution, explosion or fire, resulting in serious injury or death and property damage.
Ameren is determined to curb unlawful use of energy. Utilizing metering technology and our workers, we watch for signs of energy theft. An individual caught stealing is subject to immediate service disconnection, as well as criminal prosecution.
