Outdoor Grilling Tips

Outdoor grilling certainly ranks among America’s favorite warm-weather pastimes. Paying attention to safety first can keep the grilling experience a happy one.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, propane, natural gas and charcoal grills cause about 900 structural fires and 3,500 outdoor fires annually, resulting in a combined direct property loss of at least $30 million.

To stay safe:

Keep the grill away from deck railings, house siding, shrubs and other combustibles.

Never use a grill in a garage, shed or other enclosure.

Check propane and natural gas grill hoses and connections for leaks and breaks with a soap and water solution.

Never leave a grill unattended

Never use gasoline, kerosene or diesel fuel to ignite charcoal.

Keep children and pets away from the grill.

Read and follow the grill manufacturer instructions.

Food precautions

Keep meats and other perishables refrigerated until you are ready to put them on the grill or table.

Wash utensils and plates that come into contact with raw meat before using them for cooked foods.

Cook meat, fish and poultry thoroughly.

Promptly refrigerate leftovers.
