When it comes to houses, being uptight is a good thing. Indeed, year-round comfort and economy depends on how well you “air seal” your home by closing holes, cracks and gaps where air can pass into or out of your home.
You can test for air leaks by using a lighted incense stick. On a windy day, hold the lighted stick next to windows, doors, electrical outlets, plumbing fixtures and other locations where outside air might enter your home. Air leaks show up when you see the smoke move horizontally. The biggest holes are most often found in the attic and the basement. Seal leaks with caulk, weather stripping or other appropriate sealants.
