The World Bird Sanctuary and UE have teamed up the past four years to study the effects of UE’s transmission right-of-way maintenance practices on American song birds and their nesting habits. Boxes have been placed on transmission towers in attempt to get the birds to nest.
This summer the World Bird Sanctuary and UE got quite a surprise when a greatcrested flycatcher called a nest box home. “A World Bird Sanctuary naturalist found a family of great crested flycatchers during a field inventory,” says Scott Liebel, supervising engineer, Energy Delivery Technical Services Resource Management. “We banded three babies. This is quite a surprise since there are not that many documented sightings of great cresteds using nest boxes.”
