Education - Teaching Children about Safety

Keep your children safe by teaching them these easy rules:

Safety around Electricity!

Don’t play with electrical outlets. Don’t place your finger or any object in an electrical outlet.

Don’t climb trees, fly a kite or play with other toys around overhead lines.

Stay away from substations, power poles and transformers—generally, the big green boxes in some yards.

Don’t release metallic balloons outdoors. If they touch an overhead electrical line, they can cause a fire and perhaps even an outage.

Don’t touch anything electrical if your hands are wet or if you’re standing on a wet floor or surface—inside or outside.

If you see a power line on the ground, stay away from it and immediately tell an adult.

Safety around Natural Gas!

Natural gas smells like “rotten eggs.” If you notice a rotten egg odor, leave your house and then tell an adult about it.

Never turn on a light or use a phone in your home if you smell natural gas—that rotten egg odor! Go outside and then tell an adult. They will call AmerenUE.
