Ameren's Renewable Energy Initiatives

Renewable energy is energy produced from sources that replenish themselves naturally, never run out, and are cleaner for the environment. These resources include:

Wind

Sunlight (solar energy)

Landfill and agricultural waste (biomass)

The heat of the earth (geothermal)

Water (some low-impact and run-of-river hydroelectric facilities)

As a responsible steward of the environment, Ameren is committed to exploring all of these renewable energy options. In fact, the company already has a number of renewable initiatives under way—see AmerenUE’s Facts about AmerenUE’s Commitment to Develop Renewable Energy Resources brochure. Other renewable initiatives include:

Pure Power – AmerenUE’s voluntary renewable energy program – empowers AmerenUE electric customers to support wind farms and other renewable energy facilities in the Midwest. Read how the Pure Power program works at www.ameren.com/PurePower.

Seeking partners to develop wind-powered generation for our portfolio.

Funding a project at the University of Missouri-Rolla to develop a solar home for entry in the U.S. DOE Solar Home Competition.

Support of Missouri Schools Going Solar, a program in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources that provides solar panels to schools.

Exploring, testing and evaluating opportunities for using coal-bed methane gas, landfill gas, agricultural methane and other alternative energy sources to generate electricity.

Researching the feasibility of sequestering CO2 underground at one of our coal-fired plants.

The LEED Incentive Grant Program, which awarded grants to 18 green building projects in Missouri to underwrite the administrative costs of recognizing these projects as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified projects.
