Transmission Right-of-Way Management

Ameren continually manages vegetation on its transmission right-of-ways to provide safe, reliable electrical service while maintaining, and, where possible, improving desirable wildlife habitat within the right-of-ways.

To control vegetation both under and to the sides of high voltage transmission wires, Ameren takes a "zoned" approach to managing right-of-ways. The zone directly beneath and 20 feet beyond the wires is called the "wire zone." It is managed to encourage low growing plant species with a mature height of 10 feet or less.

The next zone outward is the "border zone," where plants with a mature height of less than 25 feet are encouraged. All mature plant species are allowed to grow beyond the border zone. The entire right-of-way becomes a transition zone between the mature forest and the vegetation found within the right-of-way.

Ameren’s membership in Project Habitat supports its vegetation management program on transmission right-of-ways. Through this program, Ameren works with various public and private agencies to manage transmission right-of-ways to provide a healthy environment for all plant and animal life.

Workforce

Ameren uses several private contractors to perform its line clearance tree trimming. Our contractors are nationally recognized as professional arboricultural companies who meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) pruning standards and pruning methods endorsed by the International Society of Arborists (ISA). All crew foremen are certified line clearance tree trimmers, and all general foremen are arborists certified by the International Society of Arboriculture. All tree-trimming contractors working for Ameren have a valid company identification badge.

Brush/Debris Removal

When a crew is trimming for regular maintenance, the debris is normally removed from the property unless other arrangements are made with the property owner to leave the debris.

When trees and branches are cleared from power lines due to storm damage or natural weaknesses, emergency crews will not clean up the debris but will leave it for disposal by the property owner.

If a homeowner is contracting a private tree service to trim or remove a tree, Ameren will assist in making the tree safe for a qualified tree service to do their work. The debris will be left for the homeowner’s tree service to remove.

Free Wood Chips

Wood chips are generated from trees that have been trimmed. These wood chips are available to customers, and can be delivered at your request when tree crews are in your area.

Only full loads are available and average about 10-12 yards per load. These wood chips consist of multiple tree species, are irregular in shape and color, and can include some twigs and rakings. For more information stop and ask a tree crew working in your area, or call Ameren at 800.552.7583.
