Eggs in Nesting Box

May 1: Four Chicks Pipped and Hatched

Pipping means that the chick is starting to break through the egg; an egg is considered pipped when the chick has broken a hole through the external shell. Once a chick is completely free of the egg, it is considered hatched.

All four chicks have hatched and enjoy meals from parents SiouxZee and Coal.

March 26: Three Eggs Spotted in Clutch

SiouxZee, our female peregrine falcon, now keeps three eggs warm in the clutch.

Notice the snow in the photo (right). A severe winter storm hit March 24 leaving behind up to 12 inches of snow in some areas. SiouxZee was diligent and kept her eggs safe and warm!

March 19: First Egg Laid

Our female peregrine falcon, SiouxZee, laid her first egg on Tuesday, Mar. 19. When you view the site, you can expect to see an egg laid once every 2 or 3 days, with a total of 4 or 5 eggs for the clutch.

The female peregrine sporadically incubates the eggs for the first 3 eggs, then will "sit tight" on all eggs once the whole clutch has been laid. This delayed incubation is thought to help ensure that all the eggs hatch close to the same day. If there's a large size disparity between the first and last chicks hatched, the oldest and largest chicks may demand all the food, and the younger, smaller chicks may not survive.

Keep a close eye on the website to watch the male - yet to be named - bring food to the female and sometimes take his turn at incubating the eggs! This gives the female some time to feed and take care of her feathers (preen).
