Callaway Plant
Callaway Nuclear Plant Media Guide
Our Callaway nuclear plant, which produces about a quarter of AmerenUE’s power, has consistently been an industry leader in both safety and performance. Since startup in 1984, Callaway has generated an average of 8.9 billion kilowatthours of electricity per year—equal to the amount used annually by more than 750,000 average households. All the plants with more lifetime generation had been operating at least 11 years longer than Callaway!

History
The plant went into service December 1984. Total project cost was $3 billion.
Operation
The Callaway Plant is a Standardized Nuclear Unit Power Plant System (SNUPPS), using a Westinghouse four-loop pressurized water reactor and a General Electric turbine-generator. The plant went into service December 1984. Uranium is used in a process called nuclear fission that heats water into steam. The steam, under pressure, spins the blades of a turbine, which in turn spins a generator that creates electricity.
