How Neighbors Will Be Notified

In a site emergency or general emergency, neighbors within a 10-mile radius will be notified via telephone through an early warning system known as the Reverse 911 Call System. It will be activated prior to any protective actions. The system will call homes and businesses to alert them of an emergency at Callaway Plant. A recorded message will inform neighbors to tune into the Emergency Alert System radio station (KTXY 106.9 FM) for emergency information. Other radio and television stations also likely will broadcast emergency information.

If protective actions are required, public alert systems will be activated. Public alert systems will include sirens and tone-alert radios in the local Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ). More information on the public-alert systems is provided below.

Sirens

Sirens are located in areas of high population. If you hear a siren, go indoors and tune your radio to the Emergency Alert System station (106.9 FM).

Siren Tests. Sirens are tested monthly to ensure operability. Tests are normally on the first Tuesday of the month except for holidays and operational conflicts. Individual sirens also are tested after maintenance or repairs.

Tone-Alert Radios
Tone-alert radios have been provided to homes in areas of low population. These radios will come on automatically if there is an emergency. Should the tone-alert radios sound, the Emergency Alert System radio station (KTXY 106.9 FM) will tell you what is happening and what action to take.

Tone-Alert Radio Tests. Tone-alert radios are tested both weekly and monthly. The weekly tests are on a random basis. The monthly tests are scheduled but not publicized. If you reside in the Emergency Planning Zone and you cannot hear a warning siren, call 800.880.5953. Your location will be evaluated for a tone-alert radio.

Defective Radios. If you have a tone-alert radio that you believe is defective, contact your county’s Emergency Management Director; Callaway Nuclear Plant at 800.880.5953.
