Callaway Plant has operated safely since it began operating in 1984, due in large part to the quality of plant construction, continuous preventive maintenance and ongoing rigorous training for plant personnel.
The plant is inspected routinely by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) resident inspectors who are on site at the plant.
In addition, the men and women who operate Callaway Plant are licensed by the NRC after completing a demanding and arduous training program.
Callaway Plant was designed to ensure it could withstand earthquakes, tornadoes and other natural and man-made hazards. The reactor containment building features steel-reinforced concrete walls that are four feet thick.
