ON ITS OWN

At one point in CIPSCO history, the company directly or indirectly, through subsidiaries, owned and operated 34 ice plants, 17 central heating systems and 6 street railway systems.

However, in 1948 CIPSCO ceased to be a subsidiary of the Middle West Corp., when that company re-distributed its shares to company stockholders. At the same time, CIPSCO was busy selling or closing many of its ice properties, as well as its diversified businesses, including the Taylorville heat plant. Thus, by the end of 1951, the company was engaged only in electric and gas public utility services.
