Following World War I, the American Legion was born during a national caucus held in the Shubert-Jefferson Theatre in the Union Electric building.

CIPS acquired the Farmers Bank Building and Annex in downtown Springfield, renaming it the Public Service Building and relocating the headquarters from Mattoon to Springfield.

Flooding on the Illinois River and many tributaries threatened CIPS operations. Using boats to ply the streets around the CIPS gas and electric plants in Beardstown, employees worked around the clock to maintain gas and electric service.

Through a merger with Middle West Power Co., CIPS acquired the Grand Tower Power Station in southwestern Illinois on the Mississippi River, bringing the company's holdings to 7 generating stations, 15 ice plants, and 2 interurban railways.
