A November ice storm swept across central Illinois, bringing down both CIPS primary and high-voltage transmission lines like this one in Quincy.
   
1950s
For decades, UE owned Illinois-based gas operations in and around Alton. The company's acquisition of other utilities in the 1950s brought additional Missouri-based gas customers. The company now provided gas in 67 Missouri communities and was the third largest distributor of natural gas in Missouri.
   
1952
CIPS joined with Illinois Power Co. and Union Electric to form the Midwest Power Pool system. The CIPS Meredosia Power Station was a key contributor to the new power pool.
   
1963
UE finished construction of one of the largest pumped storage plants at the time it was built -- the picturesque then-350-megawatt Taum Sauk Plant, in Reynolds County, Mo.
