Hundreds of St. Louisans came out on Sunday, April 20, to celebrate Earth Day—AmerenUE style

April 20, 2008

The company’s displays included UE’s first hybrid bucket truck, which runs on both electricity and diesel fuel.

Other attractions were found inside UE’s interactive “Smart Energy Efficiency” house.

They included a computer model showing how planting various species of trees in certain areas affects energy usage; a device that demonstrates how much muscle power is needed to generate a kilowatt of electricity; an exhibit identifying the “energy hogs” among your appliances; and a demonstration of the low energy demands of new, Energy StarŪ-rated appliances compared to older, less efficient models.

UE’s Cara Dolly, a.k.a. “The Light Bulb Lady,” discusses the merits of compact fluorescent bulbs.

UE volunteer, John Schnack, discusses the power pros and cons of various appliances.

A family finds that generating a kilowatt of electricity takes a lot of work!
