The zebra mussel is a fingernail sized, non-edible, freshwater mollusk with black and white stripes which multiplies rapidly and will attach to any firm surface, including metal, concrete, wood, rubber and plastic. As they clump together, zebra mussels can clog pipes in municipal water intakes and in industrial and generating station water systems, as well as foul boat hulls.
Overland transport on boats can be one of the greatest risks for spreading zebra mussels. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has posted several ways to prevent the zebra mussel from spreading.
