Zebra Mussels at the Lake of the Ozarks

Watch out for zebra mussels! They’ve been spotted at the Lake of the Ozarks. If the infestation becomes severe they can cause real damage to boats, docks and other facilities.

What is this dangerous creature?

The zebra mussel is a fingernail sized, non-edible, freshwater mollusk with black and white stripes which multiplies rapidly and will attach to any firm surface, including metal, concrete, wood, rubber and plastic. As they clump together, zebra mussels can clog pipes in municipal water intakes and in industrial and generating station water systems, as well as foul boat hulls.

Overland transport on boats can be one of the greatest risks for spreading zebra mussels. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has posted several ways to prevent the zebra mussel from spreading.

Visit the MDC site, Zebra Mussels: Missouri’s Most Unwanted, for more information.
