Dimmable LEDs
For Electric Customers

Dimmer switches you may have already installed in your home for dimming traditional incandescent light bulbs will probably not work.

LEDs face a dimming challenge similar to that of CFLs in which their electronics are often incompatible with dimmers designed for incandescents. An LED bulb with the wrong style dimmer switch may not receive enough power to operate at lower dimming levels or it may be damaged by current spikes. The dimmer and the LED driver electronics must be carefully matched.

Some LED light fixture manufacturers publish lists of specific dimmer products tested and approved for use with their fixtures. A qualified lighting expert can help you match your particular application with your lighting need.

More advanced LED dimmers may use low-voltage controls allowing dimming of LEDs down to 5%.
