Gas Boiler Overview
For Natural Gas Customers

ENERGY STAR® certified boilers have annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) ratings of 85% or greater. AFUE is the measure of heating equipment efficiency which compares how much natural gas is used for heat and how much is lost out the chimney or flue. An 85% AFUE boiler uses 85% of the natural gas for heat, while 15% is lost out the chimney or flue. ENERGY STAR boilers achieve greater efficiency with several features.

  • Uses less natural gas by utilizing an electronic ignition, eliminating the need to have the pilot light burning all the time.
  • ENERGY STAR boilers use newer technologies with combustion to extract more heat from the same amount of fuel. The sealed combustion chamber uses outside air to fuel the burner, helping to reduce drafts and improves safety.
  • ENERGY STAR natural gas boilers use about 6% less natural gas than a standard boiler.
