Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC), so critical in maintaining building comfort and employee productivity use a significant amount of electricity. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that space conditioning accounts for over 50% of the total energy use in commercial buildings. Improving the efficiency of HVAC systems can significantly reduce electric operating costs.
The SEER rating, which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, identifies the efficiency of the air conditioner. The higher the SEER rating, the less energy it uses to cool. Older units may have a SEER rating of 8, while ENERGY STAR models
must be 14 SEER or higher. Improvements in technology have pushed some ENERGY STAR certified units over 25 SEER rating.
