For Electric & Natural Gas Customers
You can usually make a new or existing roof cool by selecting the appropriate surface. Roof coatings of white or special reflective pigments that reflect sunlight can protect the roof surface from ultra-violet (UV) light and chemical damage. Some coatings offer water protection and restorative features.
Some roofing systems are similar to a membrane and reflect sunlight well. If your home has sheeting with layers of tar or asphalt with gravel, check to see if the gravel can be substituted with white rock chips or white marble chips. Membrane roofs can also be pre-coated at the factory to make them cooler.
Shingled roofs are overlapping panels made from materials such as fiberglass asphalt, wood, polymers, or metals. When you make a purchase, look into asphalt shingles which use specially coated granules that provide better solar reflectance. Department of Energy suggests coating existing asphalt shingles to make them cool, however, it is not normally recommended or approved by shingle manufacturers.
