Ballast Overview
 For Electric Customers

When replacing standard fluorescents with energy-efficient lamps, it is necessary to replace the existing ballasts. When doing so, be sure to specify electronic ballasts. They operate 75% more quietly than conventional ballasts, eliminating the familiar flicker and hum of older fluorescent lights. A lighting contractor can assist you in calculating simple payback periods on these electrical improvements. Some paybacks can be as short as one to two years.

It is important to note that the U.S. Department of Energy has issued new efficiency standards for ballasts. As a result, magnetic ballasts are no longer being manufactured and most T12s will be phased out of production in 2012.
