A benefit of recycled denim insulation is that it comes in easy-to-handle rolls and fits snugly into the framing of standard walls and ceilings. Denim insulation is extremely effective in absorbing sound and offers thermal performance. The R-value is 3.4 - 3.7 per inch, R-13 in 2 x 4 framing and R-19 in 2 x 6 framing. It provides better performance than fiberglass at low temperatures and windy conditions.
Made up of 85% recycled natural denim and cotton fibers, denim insulation also consists of a boron-based fire retardant which stops the growth of fungus, mold, and resists pests. Boron is a low-toxic, natural mineral that is mined in the deserts of California. The insulation also contains polyolefin fibers which acts as the glue that holds the fibers together.
Denim insulation requires less energy to manufacture than other types of traditional insulation, contains no chemical irritants, and is easy to install by homeowners. Unlike traditional insulation which requires safety equipment when installing, you can install denim insulation without using a respirator or skin protection.
