Electrically commutated motors (ECM) have been used in the commercial and residential industry for years. This type of electric motor has several distinct advantages over brushed direct current (DC) motors because ECM does not make use of mechanical commutation. This eliminates the same type of mechanical wear and tear that can damage brushed DC motors.

The design of ECM presents interesting advantages over brushed DC motors. ECM offers more torque per weight, as well as more torque per watt.
