Geothermal Heat Pump Overview
 For Electric Customers

A geothermal electric heat pump - also called a ground source heat pump - is a central heating/cooling system that pumps heat from the ground to heat your home, or back into the ground when you need to cool your home. Learn more from ENERGY STAR®.

Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) are among the most efficient and comfortable heating and cooling technologies currently available, because they use the earth’s natural heat to provide heating, cooling, and often, water heating.

ENERGY STAR certified geothermal heat pumps are over 45% more energy efficient than standard electric options and now include water-to-water GHPs. Water-to-water GHPs provide space conditioning and/or domestic water heating using indoor refrigerant-to-water heat exchangers.
