HERS Rater
For Electric & Natural Gas Customers

To be able to provide Home Energy Ratings (HERS), an individual must attend a HERS Rater training program and pass the national rater test. The industry standard for HERS training is a 40-hour course spanning over 5-10 days.  Some trainers offer an online option to complete the training course. Individuals learn the basics of building science, proper use of a duct blaster and how to use and perform a blower door inspection to RESNET standards.
There are no prerequisites for individuals who wish to obtain HERS training and to take the national rater test. However, HERS subject matter is complex and the learning curve may be quicker for individuals who already have a background in the construction or home inspection industry.
