For Electric Customers
Lithium ion batteries are not yet classified as hazardous waste but when exposed to the elements, these batteries can lead to respiratory problems and, in some cases, skin rashes. In many states, it is illegal to place lithium ion batteries in regular trash. Once in the landfill, they enter the solid waste stream and contaminate soil and water. If a lithium ion battery is subjected to high temperatures and the battery pack fails, it may burst into flames or explode.
