Weatherization Overview
For Electric & Natural Gas Customers

Weatherization or weatherproofing is the practice of protecting a home or building and its interior from the elements outside.

There are many ways to protect and seal the interior of a structure from the elements:

  • Caulk, spray foam, and weather stripping around windows and doors inside and out to stop drafts.
  • Insulation plays a role in the attic, walls, under outlet covers and light switches. Many types of insulation can be thought of as weatherization, because they block drafts or protect from cold winds.
  • A water heater blanket and six feet of foam piping insulation on your cold inlet pipe and hot exiting pipe saves energy and money. For more information, visit the Department of Energy website.
  • Your furnace air duct could have leaks around the joints and fitting allowing heated or cool air to escape inside the wall, ceiling or uncontrolled air space.
