Refrigeration Overview

For Electric Customers

Identifying the many factors that play a role in wasting energy can provide you opportunities to reduce energy usage and save money. Modifying the way you use cooling and freezing, as well as using ENERGY STAR® certified appliances, will help you reduce the amount of energy you use. Check to see if you are using the ideal refrigeration settings according to the Department of Energy (DOE), which is between 37° - 40°. The DOE also recommends your standard freezer be set at 5° and a long storage freezer use a setting of 0°. Visit the DOE website to learn more about temperature settings for refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers and other small coolers.

Allow food to cool down to room temperature before placing it inside the freezer or refrigerator. Hot food will warm the refrigerator or freezer causing it to run longer. There may be foods that need to be placed immediately into the refrigerator or freezer to prevent spoiling. Opening the refrigerator or freezer less is an easy way to use less energy.

For energy saving appliances, always be sure to consider appliances with the ENERGY STAR® certified label.
