Preservation and Waste Management
Many of our energy centers are near lakes, rivers and acreage home to an assortment of wildlife. This area also provides outdoor recreational activities for boaters, anglers and hunters. We recycle coal combustion waste into beneficial uses and have voluntarily installed groundwater monitoring systems at five of our Illinois generating facilities.
 
Environmental Upgrades
The coal-fired generating facilities AEM markets to supply power have invested more than $1 billion in environmental improvements through the installation of the following technologies:

Activated carbon

Powdered activated carbon absorbs the oxidized mercury and is then collected with the fly ash in the plant’s particulate collection device.
