Ameren Illinois believes in "planting the right tree in the right place." To avoid potential tree and wire conflicts, Ameren Illinois offers a brochure to assist in selecting appropriate tree species and planting guidelines when planting near electric wires.

If you are planting new trees, keep these hints in mind:
- Plant the right tree in the right place. Avoid planting trees directly beneath power lines, near poles or too close to electrical equipment. Use the diagram below as a guide to safe spacing from overhead lines for various species of trees.
- When planting under or in close proximity to power lines, consider planting small trees and/or shrubs that are of a limited height (max. height 10-12').
- Whether you are planning to do it yourself or hire a professional, smart digging means calling 811 before each job. The 811 service marks the underground utility lines clearly so that digging in the area will not disrupt service! Homeowners often make risky assumptions about whether or not they should get their utility lines marked, but every digging job requires a call - even a small project like planting trees and shrubs.
