Ceiling Fans

For Electric & Natural Gas Customers
Ceiling fans are considered the most effective type of fan since they effectively circulate the air in a room to create a draft throughout the room. The rotation of the fan plays a role in your comfort and saving energy, here’s how.

  • In the summer, run the blades downward to push the air down creating a cool breeze. If you raise your thermostat by only two degrees and use your ceiling fan, you can lower air conditioning costs by up to 14% over the course of the cooling season. And remember, ceiling fans cool only people, not the room; so when you leave the room, turn the ceiling fan off.
  • In the winter, your ceiling fan can help improve your comfort. Most fans have a switch that allows you to reverse the motor and operate the ceiling fan at a low speed in the opposite direction. This produces a gentle updraft, which forces warm air near the ceiling down into the living space.

When purchasing a ceiling fan, look for the ENERGY STAR® label or visit the ENERGY STAR website for a list of certified fans.
