Don't be a victim of fraud

Be alert for scammers this holiday season.

Recently, we've seen an increase in scams targeted at our residential and business customers. Utility imposters are calling our customers and threatening to disconnect their service if they don't make an immediate payment with a credit card or prepaid Visa check card.

Here are a few tips to help protect yourself this holiday season.

Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason. If a caller claims to be an Ameren Illinois representative and demands immediate payment or threatens to disconnect your service, hang up and call us at 1.800.755.5000.

Ameren Illinois employees always carry identification. Don't let anyone in your home who wants to check your electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or reported a natural gas leak. On rare occasions, there may be an emergency situation, so always ask to see proper identification. If you have any questions about the identity of an Ameren Illinois utility worker, ask the person to wait outside and call 1.800.755.5000 for verification.
