Prepare your home for changing seasons

Review these tips to reduce energy and keep your home comfortable in fall and winter.

  • Have your furnace checked by a certified professional for safety and efficiency before the start of the heating season. Changing furnace filters regularly also helps.

  • Installing storm windows, caulking and weather stripping are the best ways to keep cold air from entering the home.

  • Set the thermostat a little lower. For each degree it is lowered, you can save on heating costs.

  • Programmable thermostats can help reduce heating costs by allowing better control of the settings.

  • On sunny days, open blinds, shades or draperies on the sunny side of your house to let in solar heat. Be sure to close them again at night, to help keep heat from escaping.

  • Adding insulation to attics and walls can be a significant energy-saver if your home is older. Either blown or blanket insulation holds heat so a furnace doesn’t have to operate as long.

  • Setting your hot water heater temperature to 120 degrees can save money. You can also reduce energy by upgrading your current water heater to a high efficiency heat pump or electric storage tank water heater.
