Charge Ahead Program

In February 2018, we filed the Charge Ahead program proposal with the Missouri Public Service Commission. The proposed program encourages electric vehicle (EV) and equipment use among Missouri residents and businesses, and is focused on helping Ameren Missouri customers use electricity in ways that provide a broad range of benefits, including reduced emissions, lower overall energy costs and improved productivity.

If approved, the program would initiate the following:

  • New incentives for the installation of workplace, multifamily, and public EV charging stations, as well as fast-charging EV stations near interstate highways.

  • Incentives for commercial customers transitioning to efficient electric machinery, such as forklifts and other material-handling equipment.

  • Improved energy-grid accessibility and reliability through a revised line-extension policy.

Here are three things to know about the Charge Ahead program:

  • Ameren Missouri’s Charge Ahead program is designed with Missouri’s future in mind by eliminating the barriers for EV charging and promoting the use of more efficient and cleaner electric equipment in commercial settings and on our roads.

  • This program includes development of multiple EV fast-charging islands on highway corridors as well as the development of workplace, multi-family and public EV charging destinations throughout Ameren Missouri's territory. It's part of a larger statewide vision of fast-charging stations planned by Missouri’s energy providers.

  • In addition to increasing access to EV charging stations, the program will offer numerous incentives for Ameren Missouri’s commercial customers transitioning to electric equipment. It also allows for a revision in Ameren Missouri's line-extension policy, which will make accessing and connecting to the electric grid easier and more affordable for commercial and industrial customers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle (EV)?

  • Charging time varies based on the type of charger and vehicle capability. Ameren Missouri's Charge Ahead program would provide incentives for business customers to deploy Level 2 and Level 3 charging stations at their sites.

How would the fee structure work?

  • The program would provide incentives for the installation of EV charging equipment. Pricing will be determined by the equipment operator. Some may require a fee, while others may choose to offer charging service as a free amenity at their business.

Are customers expected to pay for this program?

  • The program will be paid for by customers, who would benefit from various program incentives and the long-term impact that EV charging will have on lowering rates. The proposal to the Missouri Public Service Commission demonstrates that all customers will receive more benefit from the program than it costs.

Are there enough EVs to warrant this expense?

  • The purpose of the proposal is to accelerate adoption of EVs because of their positive impact on the environment and customer rates. Increasing awareness about the benefits of EVs and helping to establish more charging stations will allow EVs to be a practical option.
