Our next generation of advanced meters (also known as "smart meters") work through wireless two-way communication, between the meter and our improved network. The meters can “talk” to us wirelessly - and we can “talk” back to them - giving you improved reliability, outage response and great service convenience.
How is a smart meter different from my current meter?
Our smart meter is a digital meter that collects your energy use in hourly increments. In addition, these new meters and the network system work together to allow for two-way communication – the meter sends signals to Ameren Illinois and Ameren Illinois can communicate directly with the meter at your property. The smart meter and other system upgrades will allow us to detect and isolate outages sooner and restore your service more promptly.
What are the benefits of smart meters?
Customers with a smart meter will have an improvement in customer service and reliability and will also have access to other benefits, including the ability to view energy usage online and to participate in pricing options and programs to help control energy usage and costs.
What are the industry guidelines or standards for advanced or smart meters?
All meters used by Ameren Illinois are designed and manufactured by industry standards produced by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Illinois state code requires all public utilities to only install meters that meet ANSI standards. United Laboratories or UL listed products are for consumer products, and UL listing is not a requirement for advanced or smart meters owned and used by the utility industry. The rigorous ANSI standards for advanced or smart meters cover their construction, measurement, electrical safety ratings, accuracy, communications and connections. These standards ensure that the characteristics and performance of products are consistent, that manufacturers and end-users, like utilities, use the same definitions and terms and that products are tested the same way.
