The World Bird Sanctuary

The World Bird Sanctuary (WBS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of all birds through a variety of educational, field study, captive breeding and rehabilitation programs. For more than 25 years, Ameren Missouri has worked with the World Bird Sanctuary to protect birds and raptors throughout Missouri. Nesting boxes attached to transmission towers have helped yield hundreds of songbird chicks and more.

We have spent more than $300,000 to install hack boxes and hack tower material. This initiative helped reintroduce peregrine falcons to the Big River habitats where they were once abundant. World Bird Sanctuary staff members, with support from our staff, banded chicks in a peregrine falcon nest 300 feet up at the Labadie Energy Center. Labadie is one of three energy centers where this initiative has been sponsored through a collaborative effort between the WBS and Ameren Missouri. Our Sioux Energy Center has been home to a nesting pair of peregrine falcons and their chicks since 2012. Bird enthusiasts have enjoyed watching the pair as they hatched and fed their chicks!
