Family Safety

Keeping you and your family safe is an important part of Ameren's everyday commitment to providing reliable service. Here are a few safety messages for your family to keep in mind when around trees and power lines.

Downed Power Lines
ALWAYS ASSUME DOWNED WIRES ARE ENERGIZED - you cannot tell if the wire is energized from sight alone. Keep yourself, children, pets and neighbors as far away from the downed wire as possible. Do not attempt to move the line or extinguish a fire and call Ameren or 911 immediately.

Trees and Power Line Safety
Kids often do not understand the dangers of electricity and electrical equipment. Point out overhead power lines and electrical equipment to your children, and emphasize that they should never climb on or play near them. Even if the power lines aren't touching the tree, they could touch when more weight is added to the branch.

Fly kites and model airplanes in large open areas like a park or a field, safely away from trees and overhead power lines. If a kite gets stuck in a tree that’s near power lines, don’t climb up to get it. Never fly a kite on a cloudy day when a thunderstorm may be brewing.

Tree Houses and Play Houses
Children's tree houses and play houses can be a great way for your kids to spend time outdoors. However, if tree houses are positioned too close to energized power lines, they can produce tragic consequences. Tree houses along utility rights-of-way will be removed upon sight by our Vegetation Management crews to ensure the safety of your children and the general public.
