Urgency Scams
Scammers often create a false sense of urgency, pressuring customers to act quickly before they have time to verify the request.

Disconnection Threats

Threatening to disconnect utility service if payment is not received immediately.  Frequently state a service person is on the way to shut off the power.

Urgent Payment Requests

Requesting immediate payment that often includes false payment not received claims.

Unusual Forms of Payment

Request for immediate payment often includes suggested ways to pay such as Bitcoin, prepaid money cards or cash apps.

Special Discount Offers

Offering to eliminate total payment due by making an immediate partial or special discounted payment.
Impersonation Scams
Scammers may impersonate trusted organizations or employees, using familiar names and branding to appear legitimate and gain your trust.

Bogus Fees

Impersonating company representatives by asking for immediate payment for equipment installation or false repair fee requests.

Fake Phone Numbers & Websites

Online search engine postings that mimic official company contact information that directly links to scammers.

Leak Lie

Scammers may pose as utility works claiming leaks to gain entry. Don't let them in. Ameren schedules visits or shows verified ID for you to confirm employment.

Overpayment Trick

Scammers may claim you overpaid and ask for bank or card details. Don't share info. Ameren credits your account or mails a refund check.
Utilities United
Ameren has joined nearly 100 utilities nationwide to raise awareness of scam tactics and educate customers before they become victims.
