Ameren's Statement on the Clean Power Plan
|Even before the Clean Power Plan was finalized, Ameren has been focused on making the transition to cleaner energy in a responsible manner for our customers. Our 20-year energy transition plan, filed in 2014 and supported by a wide variety of stakeholders in Missouri, maintains top-tier reliability and is environmentally responsible, while at the same time minimizing the impact the transition has on customer costs. Our plan incorporates a major addition of approximately 500 megawatts of renewable energy including wind, solar, hydroelectric and landfill gas energy. The plan also includes the retirement of approximately one third of coal generating capacity which includes the retirement of Meramec Energy Center at the end of its useful life in 2022. We also continue to operate the largest and most comprehensive energy efficiency program in Missouri’s history.
Ameren is also launching two newly approved programs to bring more solar generation to our service territories. This will allow us to build more renewable generation facilities to join the O'Fallon Renewable Energy Center, which is the largest investor-owned universal solar facility in Missouri. At the same time, Ameren is investing in transmission lines and innovations like smart grid technology, which helps integrate wind and solar energy into the grid. - Ajay Arora, Vice President, Environmental Services and Generation Resource Planning, Ameren
