At Ameren, we want to ensure that our co-workers are as safe as possible both on and off the job. Safety is a value and at the core of everything we do. The corporation performs monthly audits of lagging indicators such as recordable and lost workday injuries to determine its performance against other utilities and has also performed data analytics to identify leading indicators that drive performance. Targets are established for both metrics and all co-workers are responsible for achieving these goals.

Data analysis has shown co-worker involvement in the job observation process reduces the propensity for injury. Therefore, measuring the level of job-briefing involvement and providing feedback to the organization to keep participation at an optimal level is another leading key performance indicator (KPI). Ameren has a goal of zero unsafe acts and various programs to help achieve that goal. One of these programs is the C2C program where co-workers are encouraged and incentivized to discuss and implement safe habits in their workplace and record them in a company-wide internal database in order to record and measure participation. Ameren sets participation targets for this program and updates them on a yearly basis to ensure broad awareness among our co-workers. Analysis of injury data has also shown that hazard identification and risk mitigation is another improvement opportunity which has led to the improvement of quality job briefings as another KPI which also has yearly targets identified. These and other KPIs have been chosen to drive top quartile performance compared to other investor-owned utilities.

To further assist co-workers in improving safety performance, numerous programs and procedures exist to identify hazards, evaluate injury-severity potential, and take appropriate actions to reduce the risk of injury. For example, company-wide communications are sent following certain situations, the action that was taken, and how to prevent the action in future, along with recommended training. Enabling co-workers to effectively perform job tasks without risk requires extensive training. There are standalone training programs i.e., focused on safe driving regarding various-required training topics. Behavior-based safety training has become a leading component of Ameren's safety-training approach and is also a leading KPI to ensure co-workers have the necessary skills to complete work safely. All co-worker training is tracked in a learning management software system that monitors curricula, regulatory-compliance, recertification requirements, completion status, etc.

Ameren also maintains a focus on emergency preparedness. The company operates a state-of-art fire training facility to ensure all energy centers have trained, professional fire brigades and HAZMAT teams to manage the risk of fire and other emergencies. In addition, all co-workers participate in emergency drills several times annually. The company uses the Ameren Emergency Communication System to test co-workers preparedness via two-way communication in an emergency scenario and to rapidly disseminate important information to every co-worker.

Should a major event or trend of events occur, the company performs safety standdowns to share any lessons-learned across the enterprise, reinforce safe work practices, and refresh knowledge of safety tools and resources to prevent future events. There is also a robust event analysis process to determine the root causes of safety events and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
