The Big Hollow Energy Center will be a new hybrid energy facility designed to strengthen energy reliability for all customers across Missouri, including residential, small business and industrial customers.
An 800-megawatt (MW) simple-cycle natural gas energy center will be paired with the state's first large-scale battery storage facility at a single site in Jefferson County, Missouri. The Big Hollow Energy Center will be integrated into Ameren Missouri's statewide generation and will support reliable electric service for customers throughout the company's service territory. The facility is expected to be ready to serve customers beginning in 2028.
Ameren Missouri currently operates a diverse fleet of Combustion Turbine Generators (CTGs) in Missouri and Illinois, with five natural gas-fired sites, four fuel oil-fired sites, and two dual fuel sites.TG's provide efficient, cleaner and reliable energy for our customers when they need the energy most.
On days of extreme temperatures, CTG’s give us the ability to add generation to meet the high demand. As Ameren Missouri pursues more opportunities for renewable generation like wind and solar, the nimble CTG’s are ready when renewable sources aren't generating. Having CTGs as part of our energy mix allows Ameren Missouri to maintain grid reliability and meet demand quickly with low-emission generation.
Our Maryland Heights Renewable Energy Center takes something nobody wants - gas from decomposing trash - and turns it into something everybody needs: reliable, environmentally responsible electricity. Approximately 8 megawatts of renewable electricity comes from burning methane.
Methane is a renewable resource unlike any other. It is available as a fuel 24 hours a day regardless of weather or other conditions, making landfill gas generation a safe, reliable energy source for decades to come.
The 800-MW Castle Bluff Energy Center will be a reliable backup source of energy ready to use when customers need it most. It’s designed to bolster grid reliability and can be used to deliver energy on the hottest summer days, the coldest winter days or when renewable energy is not generating as forecasted.
The site previously hosted similar on-demand generation as part of the Meramec Energy Center. Castle Bluff represents a significant upgrade in reliable backup energy for customers. Construction of the simple-cycle natural gas energy center is underway and expected to be complete by 2027.
