Smart meter installation

Watch this quick video to see how we install a smart meter. It's quick, it's easy, and you don't have to be home. Our crew member can perform the upgrade as long as there is clear and safe access to your meter and pets are secured.

About Your Installation

Ameren Missouri began smart electric meter upgrades in July 2020, and deployment will be completed by 2024. If your home or business is scheduled for an upgrade, we will notify you via letter, reminder postcard and phone call prior to installation.
  • Authorized installation contractors with Ameren Missouri ID badges will make meter upgrades weekdays during regular business hours.
  • Whether or not you are present, we can perform the upgrade as long as there is clear and safe access to your meter and pets are secured.
  • Installers will let you know when they arrive; the process will take less than 20 minutes. We will leave a notice to let you know if the upgrade was completed.
  • There may be a brief interruption to your electric service.
  • You will not see a separate line-item charge on your bill for the meter upgrade.
  • For questions or concerns about your upgrade, call 800-975-8203.

No. Whether or not you are present, we can perform the upgrade as long as there is clear and safe access to your meter and pets are secured.
It is unlikely, but there may be a brief interruption to your electric service. There's a chance that by disconnecting service and reconnecting service, an electronic device or appliance will fail simply by cycling on and off. A smart meter does not change voltage or electric current characteristics to the home or business. It has two conductors to measure power, but it cannot change the power in the home.

Ameren Missouri has a medical equipment registry, and all medical registry accounts are tagged at the meter to alert the installer. Please call our customer service number at 800.552.7583 if you would like an application for this registry or to confirm that your account is still registered.

If you are already in our medical registry, we will schedule an appointment with you to complete the meter upgrade. Please note that you will need to be at home and give consent in order for us to complete the upgrade. If you are not home for the upgrade appointment, you will need to reschedule for a time when you can be home and give consent.

If your meter has a yellow, blue or green label with the words "Type FOCUS AXRe," or "Type E650 S4x," you have an upgraded smart meter.

Living With Your New Smart Meter

Smart meters are installed free of charge. You will not see a separate line-item charge on your bill for an upgraded smart electric meter or gas module.

All meter types at Ameren Missouri are tested routinely for accuracy, including new and in-service meters. In fact, the tests that we conduct meet or exceed Missouri's regulatory requirements. Our test equipment, methods and documentation are subject to continuous review by Ameren Missouri and meet Missouri Public Service Commission accuracy requirements.

In addition to Ameren Missouri's tests, all of our smart meter suppliers test 100 percent of the meters for accuracy, utilizing very precise equipment during the production process.

AMI-enabled smart meters will automatically handle the bi-directional capabilities needed for customer-owned solar configurations. This functionality is available with every new AMI-enabled smart meter without any special programming or configuration update from Ameren Missouri or the customer. Customers with customer-owned solar panels do not need to take any action to ensure their solar panels will work correctly with their new smart meter.

Smart Meter Safety & Security

Yes. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates the use of radio frequency and considers the level of radio frequency used by smart meters to be safe. Other organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and World Health Organization, follow FCC guidelines on this issue. The American Cancer Society (ACS) has found no credible link between radio frequency exposure and cancer or other health problems.
You probably have one or more commonly used household devices that transmit and receive data using radio frequency signals, including video game controllers, cell phones, televisions, computers, baby monitors, radios, security systems, garage door openers, microwave ovens and Wi-Fi routers.
Just like your current meter, upgraded smart meters collect energy usage data. Smart meters also collect additional operational data such as 15-minute interval usage data, voltage data, outage data and diagnostic flags to help us provide you with more reliable service. Smart meters do not collect, store or transmit customer identifying information such as names and addresses.
We use our customers' energy usage and operational data for billing purposes, troubleshooting and resolving problems with equipment or services. We also provide this data to customers through their online account dashboard to help them choose a rate that fits their lifestyle.
Your personal information and data remain confidential. You retain ownership of your own privacy data (including energy usage), and Ameren Missouri will not disclose that information to external parties without your permission, except for official Ameren Missouri business or as required by law.

We have extensive cybersecurity measures in place throughout the AMI network to secure and protect customer data.

  • First, access to smart meters and usage data is controlled with authorization requirements.
  • Second, information is secured at the meter and all the way back to our systems with advanced encryption.
  • Third, all network devices are self-contained and monitored for theft or tampering.
  • Fourth, data from the network must pass through firewalls and security components before reaching Ameren Missouri.
  • Finally, all access to the AMI system is logged and recorded to alert us of unusual activity.
